It was something I\u2019d wanted to do from a young age. I went to school in Dartmouth, which is where the Royal Naval College is, and I would walk past it every day on my way to school. I was in the Intelligence branch and trained as an Arabic linguist as I joined towards the end of the Gulf War. I spent many years serving on a ship at sea through the Bosnian conflict, which was equally exciting and scary! I also got to visit many countries, made life-long friends, and it gave me a great foundation for the rest of my career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After I left, I went travelling for a few years as the Navy had given me the bug for seeing new places. However, you can\u2019t do that forever, so I returned to the UK and secured my first \u201cproper\u201d job with Hays DX (now DX Network Services). And I\u2019ve stayed within the supply chain industry ever since. There are many similarities with the Navy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-originally-attracted-you-to-j-j\"><\/span>What originally attracted you to J&amp;J?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I hadn\u2019t actually heard of J&amp;J before, but when I received the phone call to ask if I was interested in the opportunity there, I had a look at the website to learn a bit about the business. I really liked the story from when it started out as James and James, and after chatting with a few people and a few members of the team I\u2019d met before, I was quite excited by the opportunity and the growth journey. I really wanted to join at the start of that journey as that\u2019s where I thrive the most, as I\u2019d worked with a few businesses in that situation before. After going into the office and meeting the wider team, it was an absolute no-brainer. Four years later, and I still feel like I made a great choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-does-a-typical-day-look-like-for-you-at-the-moment\"><\/span>What does a typical day look like for you at the moment?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Every day is very different, but there\u2019s not a single day that goes by that I\u2019m not talking to a customer in some way, shape or form. That is without fail. The conversation can be different depending on what\u2019s going on, for example, right now we have the De Minimis and the changes from that. I need to think about the impact on customers, what we need to be doing to make things easier for them, and what we need to think about in terms of predicting what might be coming next. Everyone will say every day is different, but that\u2019s the same in any industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"have-you-learnt-anything-new-since-being-at-j-j\"><\/span>Have you learnt anything new since being at J&amp;J?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Definitely, for a start, the eCommerce industry was new to me when I joined. I\u2019d been in supply chain logistics before, but never the eCommerce fulfilment side of things. So this part of the industry was completely new to me, and it\u2019s constantly evolving. There\u2019s always something new to learn, making every day different. If I wasn&#8217;t learning something new every day, I\u2019d probably be looking to do something else. If every day is the same and you\u2019re not learning anything, it can be a bit dull. Lately, it\u2019s been De Minimis, duties and taxes around American politics.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-do-you-enjoy-most-about-working-for-j-j\"><\/span>What do you enjoy most about working for J&amp;J?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For me, it\u2019s the energy, the passion and the culture of the team. I always describe it as having our own little tribe, and I love being part of that. There\u2019s always a buzz and energy; everybody wants to get involved where they can. It\u2019s just really great to be part of a team where everyone is thinking the same, and that\u2019s why I describe it as a tribe.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"where-do-you-see-j-j-going-in-the-future-and-the-overall-industry\"><\/span>Where do you see J&amp;J going in the future, and the overall industry?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think eCommerce is growing at a meteoric pace; it\u2019s flying and will continue to do so. I think AI is going to play a huge part in that, as it already is. It helps to provide a more telling experience for customers. We\u2019ve already started to incorporate AI into our business, especially the sales teams and CS teams, so that\u2019s where I see the focus being over the next 12 to 18 months.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-do-you-consider-your-biggest-career-achievement-or-standout-moment-to-date\"><\/span>What do you consider your biggest career achievement or standout moment to date?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are a couple of things for me when I look back over my career. One of those was moving from the military into the civilian world, and that overall transition. You come from a situation where there\u2019s a lot of camaraderie, and again, it\u2019s quite tribal, so I wasn\u2019t sure how I was going to cope with that transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing I think I\u2019m proudest of is that I\u2019ve gone on to build professional relationships that mirror that tribe and camaraderie way of working. Having a group of people who are happy to get in the trenches with you and go over the top before you is huge. I don\u2019t think that happens on its own, and I don\u2019t think it\u2019s just luck. I like to think I\u2019ve played a part in helping to build that. I think over time you begin to understand how you work and lead a team, and I like to look back and be proud of the part I played.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you move through your career and work with lots of different people, you watch those teams grow and become empowered to make their own decisions, and that\u2019s a really nice thing to see. I\u2019ve always benefitted from having great mentors, so I\u2019m hoping that there\u2019s an element of me that\u2019s passing that onto the next generation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"aside-from-j-j-and-the-ecommerce-industry-what-else-interests-you\"><\/span>Aside from J&amp;J and the eCommerce industry, what else interests you?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I do quite a lot of walking and cycling in my spare time, but I\u2019m a fair-weather person, so that\u2019s starting to come to an end for the year. My husband will go out every day regardless, but I tend to stick to weekends and cycle around the village. I also play netball and have done so for the last 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About a year ago, I took up pottery and have become obsessed with it. It started from a taster session I booked for a friend, and I came away and immediately signed up for the beginner\u2019s course and haven\u2019t looked back. Any spare moment, I\u2019m over at the studio throwing pots, bowls and jugs. My husband is having to put up more shelves so I can display everything, and I\u2019m slowly getting bigger and better.
