James and James's UK fulfilment centre in Northampton

Reach customers across the EU, today and tomorrow, with our European fulfilment centre

We currently ship orders to consumers across the European Union (EU) from our fulfilment centre in the UK. Thanks to the UK’s fast, low-cost delivery services and membership of the EU, it’s as efficient to do this, as it is to ship from a location in mainland Europe.

Depending on the outcomes of Brexit, that may change. Fortunately, we’ve got a contingency plan in place, to ensure our clients aren’t affected. This includes opening an additional European fulfilment centre on the mainland.

Concerned about Brexit?

Currently, the UK’s membership of the EU makes it simple to ship orders from the UK across Europe. Orders aren’t subject to customs checks or import duties, providing a fast, frictionless experience for European consumers. Depending on the outcome of Brexit, that may change. Fortunately, we’ve got a contingency plan in place, to ensure our clients aren’t affected.

When is Brexit happening?

The date for the UK to leave the EU is now 31 January 2020. But there will be an election in the UK on 12 December 2019, which could change this. Depending on which party wins the election, Brexit may go ahead on the planned date, under the previous Withdrawal Agreement Bill. But it could also be delayed, to allow for renegotiations and a referendum. Or it could be cancelled entirely.

How can retailers prepare?

If Brexit does go ahead, it should now happen in an orderly way, with a transition period lasting until 31 December 2020, at least. This will give retailers the opportunity to adopt new procedures for trading between the UK and EU. But if you do want to start preparing now, you can follow the UK government’s extensive advice on importing to and exporting from the UK and EU after Brexit.

What’s our contingency plan?

If Brexit does result in significant trade barriers between the UK and EU, we’d plan to open an additional fulfilment centre in mainland Europe. This would enable retailers to ship their stock in bulk into the EU, absorbing any customs delays and taxes themselves, in order to maintain a frictionless experience for EU customers. We have experience of opening such facilities rapidly.
